Outline for Writing Workshops
The
writing workshop is ninety minutes in length and should be held in a classroom
or other suitable venue where students can write. A SmartBoard or an
overhead projector and whiteboards are required.
I encourage students to THINK OUTSIDE THE
BOX!
I
go over the basics of sitting down and writing a book including writing a
synopsis, creating chapter outlines, plotting the story, researching, journaling
and looking for the right publisher. We do writing exercises to stimulate
student's imaginations and to show them how ideas are everywhere and how putting
them together in a readable form is the author's daunting task. A writing aid
called a Story Spinner is used to get them started, often with surprising
results. The writing exercises involve the use of cognitive and logic skills,
which challenge both younger and older students to write beyond their comfort
zone.
Non-linear thinking is encouraged with an emphasis on innovative thinking which leads to new, exciting writing.
The idea of
writers
without borders is an important one. Giving students license to
practice writing without rules leads to improved and heightened creativity which
is reflected in the short exercises done by the students.
Informing
students about available awards and contests that provide funding to young
writers and the publishing houses that accept young people’s work provides
positive incentives. Students are being published and being PAID (the last part
usually gets their attention).
The
most important tool in the writer's toolbox is reading!
To
write, you must read.
Students
are encouraged to take a chance on themselves and aim high. They can make their
dreams come true!
